Pawandeep Premi - Waterloo, Canada
Thump…Thump…
His hands fall hard on the stairs,
Maa… Maa….
He cries while he climbs upstairs.
Peet… Peet…
I say his name to comfort him,
Hehe…Hehe…
A laugh mixed with cries, comes from him.
Sonay…Sonay…
Mumma’s right here, come to me,
Thump…Thump….
He’s up the stairs, now hugging me.
LubDub…LubDub…
A different beat, what do I hear,
LubDub…LubDub…
His little heart gallops close to ear.
Mumma...Mumma…
His voice much calmer now,
Hushh…Hushh...
Rocking in my arms, my baby’s asleep now.
2.
It’s my first day at Edna Staebler School,
Hopefully, I’ll be able to maintain my cool.
Oh! How long we waited for this Monday,
Buying School items, clothes & things for this day.
Met my teacher, Mrs. Steele this past week,
We figured out Red and Blue days of the week.
Last night, I was busy packing,
Wondering what I need for lunch and snacking.
A short drive from home to school,
At Bear paws, anxious kids line up and some drool.
Waiting for the first bell to ring,
Knots in my stomach and to Mom’s hand I cling.
Strange feeling first day after every long holiday,
Be it Monday or any examination day.
I know this feeling; For sure, it couldn’t be my first day,
Sharing the emotions, I realize this is Sahib’s first day.
Parents, teachers, volunteers and students,
All making different, weird, and funny facial dents.
Smiling face, upset stomach and heart’s pumping,
Now crying, we both feel like running away and flunking.
My dear son, I wish I could stay and hold your hand,
But we are here to learn, grow and understand.
As you make new friends, be happy, laugh and play,
My little baby, now a boy is heading to Kindergarten today.
