The Priority- Surjeet Kalsey

Woman is treated
as a second class being from ages !
Her soul and mind
remained devoid of priority !
Entangled in the circles
from traditions from
time immemorial
she remained "dalit"
and her soul thirsty !

First she yearns for mother's love
who gives her a name as a "stone"
A son- the promise of the future
gets food and water first
Mother gives him priority !
The daughter comes after him
and she remains hungry and thirsty !

The girl is the honour
of her father's turban
but never becomes
the star of his eyes !

She is not to earn
disrespect to the family
as she has to go away
To live with strangers
under different skies !

Yearning for love
wanders in the deserts
her soul becomes thirsty !
She yearns for attention.
She longs for love.

When in the home of strangers
her husband too often forgets
her presence and her existence
while he gives every one else
attention and priority !

The palms of her bare feet
blister while wandering in
the scorching deserts !
She hopes for the rain drops
looking at the gray black clouds
keeps on wandering
from desert to desert
if she can find any water
to quench her thirst !

The more she yearns
more she creates misery.
The more she desires
more she becomes hungry.
And she never fulfills
her heart's desire-
to be treated
with respect and dignity !

She puts everybody else
before her - her husband
her sons, her daughters,
Her in laws, and all other
family members
friends and relatives !
If she does not put
the others first
she is seen as selfish.
And if she puts herself first
she is being treated
as outcast a "dalit"
again she remains devoid of priority !

The society still treats woman
as a second class being !
Her soul and mind remains
devoid of priority !
No matter what she does
no matter what she becomes
no matter if she reaches the moon
no matter if she acquires
all the talent and all the knowledge
she is still being treated unequal
she would remain a "dalit" and
her soul would remain thirsty !
